Time Capsule Promise
Our promise for sealed time capsules: how they are stored, delivered on the morning you chose, changed or cancelled, and delivered early if Lekamail ever closes.
What this promise covers
A time capsule is a letter, postcard or voice letter that you seal today and that Lekamail delivers on a date you choose, up to 25 years from now.
Some of the letters you seal will be read by people who are small children today. This promise sets out exactly how we look after them, and it forms part of our Terms of Service. If anything in the Terms seems to conflict with this promise when it comes to capsules, this promise wins.
Sealing
When you seal a capsule, we encrypt it and store it separately from your everyday mail, with an independent backup kept in a different location within your chosen data region.
You receive a confirmation with a capsule code. Recipients who are told about a capsule in advance receive their own code too, so they can claim it even if their address changes.
Postcard includes one capsule. Letter and Parcel include as many as you like.
Delivery
We deliver on the morning of the chosen date, in the recipient’s time zone.
If delivery fails, for example because the recipient’s address no longer exists, we retry every day for 30 days and let you know. If we still can’t deliver it, we keep the capsule safely so that you, or the recipient with their capsule code, can claim it later.
If you change your mind
You can edit, redate or cancel a capsule until 24 hours before delivery. After that it stays sealed, even for you, so that it arrives exactly as it was meant to.
Cancelled capsules are deleted within 30 days, and from backups within a further 60 days.
If your plan changes
Capsules you have already sealed are always delivered, even if you move from Letter or Parcel to the free Postcard plan, and even if a payment fails. Downgrading only affects how many new capsules you can seal.
If something happens to you
Capsules are delivered even if your account becomes inactive or is closed after long inactivity.
You can name a trusted contact in Settings → Time capsules. With proof of your death or incapacity, your trusted contact can cancel capsules on your behalf, but can never open, read or change them.
If something happens to Lekamail
If Lekamail ever shuts down, we will deliver every sealed capsule early, with a note explaining why, at least 90 days before closing.
If Lekamail is acquired, this promise must be honoured in full by the new owner as a condition of the sale. We will never sell, read or discard a sealed capsule.
Privacy and security
Capsule contents are never read by our staff and never used for anything but delivery. Our Privacy Policy explains everything else about how we look after your data.
